Hot water on demand, not on standby

A storage tank keeps 40 to 75 gallons of water hot around the clock, whether anyone is home or not. A tankless (on-demand) water heater does the opposite: it fires only when a hot tap opens, heats the water as it flows through, and shuts off when you close the tap. The result is continuous hot water — you can run back-to-back showers without waiting for a tank to recover — a wall-mounted unit that frees up floor space, and lower standby energy loss.

What the install involves

A tankless unit draws more gas while it runs than a tank does, so most installs include a gas line and meter check, plus new venting (PVC on condensing models, stainless on non-condensing), a condensate drain on condensing units, and the water and electrical hook-ups. Milani handles all of it, sizes the unit to your fixture count and the coldest incoming water temperature of the year, sets the temperature, and registers the warranty.

Condensing vs. non-condensing

A condensing tankless unit has a second heat exchanger that recovers heat from the exhaust, so it runs more efficiently and vents in inexpensive PVC. A non-condensing unit costs less up front, vents hotter exhaust through stainless, and is a sound choice where budget matters more than the last few points of efficiency.
